2/19/2001 The Philippine Congress to deal with issue of gambling The Philippine Congress is to address the issue of illegal gambling at the same time as lawmakers warn against a possible compromise between the Macapagal-Arroyo government and deposed president Joseph Estrada. It is feared that the Macapagal-Arroyo administration will enter into a possible comprise deal on the former president?s unexplained wealth. Former House prosecutor, Raul Gonzales Gonzalez urged Mrs. Macapagal-Arroyo to use all necessary means to assure the conviction of her predecessor and his co-respondents in order to ensure that Estrada does not regain power. A presidential spokesman admitted that the government had not taken a concrete stand on the illegal gambling issue as it was convinced that the problem is best resolved by lawmakers. ?But this does not mean the (present) administration will tolerate illegal gambling activities, like jueteng,? the Palace official said. ?All we?re saying is that the solution to the problem is legislation.? According to the spokesman, Congress needed to decide whether or not to close down gambling completely or to ?allow some form of gambling to continue.? He hinted that, to date, weak laws had hampered police crackdowns on illegal gambling. He said that unfortunately, the majority of Filipinos are in favor of gambling and that the country lacks strong laws to support a government drive against this ?social disease |
