4/20/2001 Online gambling on the stock market at VSMarket Gambling on the stock market is nothing new but four yetties (young entrepeneurial technocrats) from Sweden have developed a a form of online gambling that lets visitors bet on "races" among stocks. At VSMarket.com stock races, each bettor picks which stock from a group of 12 will rise by the largest percentage by day's end. The races are similar to day trading but the terms are much worse as the house takes a third of the pot and the payoff depends depends, as it does at the track on what percentage of the betting was on that stock. Customers pay by credit card and minimum bet is US$1. Despite only being officially launched at the end of February, VSMarket is growing rapidly. A month later, approximately 1,000 unique visitors were placing about 1,500 bets a day, resulting in an average US$8,000 in daily payoffs and US$4,000 for the house. VSMarket claims that the company can make a profit on monthly charges of only US$500,000 bringing it closer and closer to its target annualized revenue for the end of the financial year of US$10 million. Regarding the legal issues surrounding online gambling, says Jan-Didric Troell, the company's legal counsel, "We took great precautions to make sure we weren't in violation of any laws." Albert Leffler, chief information officer, explains, "We don't view ourselves as a gambling service but as a financial services instrument." Marc Falcone, an analyst with Bear Stearns, vehemently disagrees. "This company is clearly offering a form of internet gaming," he says. "You're betting on the performance of something, in this case stocks." However, he believes that VSMaket may succees in exploiting its ambigious nature if it maintains a low profile and avoids the pornographic advertising that is inherent to so many gaming sites. |
