11/6/2000 Gambling Shares Rise as US Online Gambling Ban Fears Decrease Shares of CryptoLogic Inc., an Internet casino software provider based in Canada, soared on Friday as investors began to think that there was little chance of the United States congress passing legislation this year to ban Internet gambling in the U.S. CryptoLogic, a Canadian company whose software enables secure transactions over the Internet for online casinos around the world saw its shares rose more 14.0 percent to an intrady high of C$19.75. Late in the afternoon, they were up C$2.05 at C$19.30. Shares have traded below C$20 since October, compared to a 52-week high of C$68.50 reached in early March. Nancy Chan-Palmateer, CryptoLogic?s spokeswoman, says that the proposed US legislation might die a natural death if Congress, which reconvenes around Nov. 14, ignores it. "Once Congress reconvenes, members will focus on key budget issues and some of the peripheral issues might not be debated," stated Chan-Palmateer. "If the legislation were to fail, which we believe it will, it?ll be a positive step for the Internet gaming industry." "People are pretty sure that we are not going to have any Internet legislation this year in the United States. So it is a positive development for the company," said analyst Peter Swan of Pacific Growth Equities in San Francisco. Swan said he expects the stock to reach $21 within 12 months. CryptoLogic was trading up more than 10 percent at $12 1/2 on the Nasdaq index during late afternoon. In late October, the company said third-quarter revenue rose 13 percent to $9.0 million from $8.0 million in the year-earlier period. Net income slid to $2.6 million from $4.8 million during the third-quarter of 1999. |
