| Rotary auction - donate to a better Future |
10/30/2001 I would like to thank each and every one of the donors who contributed to our auction this year The club raised nearly $18,500 during the final tally of receipts from the Laughlin Rotary Club?s annual television auction reveal. The auction is one of the club?s two major annual fund-raisers, it was on Oct. 6 in the ballroom of the Flamingo Laughlin Hotel and Casino. The club also sponsors a golf tournament at the Emerald River Golf Course each spring. Tim Atkins, president of the Laughlin Rotary Club said ?Each year we begin the auction at 8 a.m. and continue until all the items are sold. Everything we offer for sale is donated to the club for the auction from local and area businesses.? The total items went on the auction were 228. The bids are taken over the telephone and in person at the site. This year the club offered door prizes for the audience in addition to the items up for auction. The money goes to support a number of community projects in the Laughlin area. As four renewable scholarships for seniors from Laughlin High School each year, sponsors a tutorial reading program at William G. Bennett Elementary School, and provides funding for high school students attending Boys and Girls State programs during the summer. In previous years, the auction was carried live over TV-2, Laughlin?s own television station, which is also carried on cable in Bullhead City. TV-2 owner Bruce Clark, assisted by TV-2 news reporter Gary Sheler, served as emcee and auctioneer for the event. Besides, , the club has contributed some $65,000 to its mini-grant program at both schools, during its 11 years of existence he said. Under the mini-grant program, teachers are given the opportunity to apply for grants of up to $300 each to purchase equipment, supplies and programs to supplement classroom instruction. ?But the Laughlin Rotary Club supports other local programs, programs that don?t usually get a lot of publicity,? Atkins added. ?Those programs are also a part of our determination to make Laughlin a better place to live.? Atkins said ?I would like to thank each and every one of the donors who contributed to our auction this year. Without them, we wouldn?t be able to support these kinds of programs,? |
