Legalities.com Launches Online Bookseller Site

SAN RAMON, CA - June 27, 2000 ( Press Release Network): A new on-line bookseller, legalities.com, launched its Internet site today focused on self-help law books. Carrying the entire catalogues of self-help law publishers, the legalities.com site is aimed at the growing segment of the population that cant afford skyrocketing legal fees, says Dennis Spencer Kahane, the sites founder.

Kahane, himself a successful business lawyer, said he had seen too many potential clients who "had a very real need for legal advice, but just couldnt afford a lawyer." In his 28 years of legal practice, Kahane said he had advised "Countless people to purchase self-help law books in order to write their own wills, do their own divorces, form their own corporations, and file their own bankruptcies."

With the typical attorneys fee at $200 an hour, "$20 will either buy you one of our books or six minutes of a lawyers time," said Kahane. "There are times when you absolutely need a lawyer--such as when you are dealing with a complex transaction or contract, or when you face criminal charges, or when the stakes are just too high to go it alone--but there are a whole lot of things you can do for yourself," Kahane added.

Legalities.com was built entirely by Kahane, who describes himself as 'a computer guy', working on 'nights and weekends' over many months, while spending his days practicing law at his San Ramon, California, office. "Ive been putting computers together since the Osborne and Sinclair in the 70s and writing HTML code long before Internet Explorer and Netscape came along," he said. "So it made sense for me to do this. People need legal help on many issues, but they just cant handle the fees lawyers charge. Our books are written by lawyers in plain English, and if youll just spend the time to read the book, you can actually resolve many of your legal problems," said Kahane.

The books cover a vast panorama of legal issues, from dealing with debt to filing bankruptcy; to starting new businesses and forming corporations, limited liability companies, and partnerships; to family law, including pre-marital agreements, divorce, and child custody; to employment law; landlord-tenant law; immigration; patents, copyright and trademark; landlord-tenant and real estate law; wills and trusts; and many other topics. "Weve even got a nice collection of books on victims rights," said Kahane, who serves as a Reserve Police Officer in San Ramon. Numerous state-specific books are also kept in stock. "Were discounting all our books by between 20 to 30 percent off list price," Kahane said. "I know of no other Internet site dedicated solely to self-help law books," Kahane said. "Other on-line booksellers do carry self-help law books, but those mega-sites are just so huge that trying to navigate through their hierarchy to find an assortment of books from which to choose, on, say, doing your own divorce, is just about impossible. At legalities.com, the structure is very straight-forward. If you want to know how to handle your own divorce, you just go straight to that topic and make your choice," Kahane said.

Kahane, a former Chairman of Californias Committee of Bar Examiners and former partner at San Franciscos Pillsbury Madison & Sutro, said, "Its just a crying shame that a typical middle class person with a middle class problem cant obtain legal services at an affordable fee. I put legalities.com together in the hope that by getting self-help law books into the hands of these people theyll be able to obtain the legal advice they need to protect their interests."

Legalities.com is the third web site built by Kahane. His law office maintains a site at kahane.com, and he also owns laws.com, which he describes as a starting point for legal research. Legalities.com is his first eCommerce site. "I reserved a whole bunch of good domain names back when most folks had never even heard of the Internet. Ive held onto legalities.com for quite a few years, and Im glad I finally put in the time--and its been a lot of grueling hours over the past several months--to make legalities.com a reality," Kahane said, adding, "I genuinely hope this site helps people understand their legal rights and responsibilities."
