| IG Group hits the jackpot |
7/19/2001 Profits up 53% at betting company This week, UK spread betting firm IG Group reported pre-tax profits up 53 percent in preliminary results for the year ended in May. Pre-tax profits were up to ?15.4 million compared to ?10.1 million in 2000 while turnover increased by 41 percent to ?33.4 million. Despite the severe global economic crunch, the company?s financial turnover, including its non-betting activities such as margin and foreign exchange trading, grew by 44 percent to ?27.5 million. Sports spread-betting turnover was up 28 percent to ?5.9 million. In a market hit by serious downturns, IG shares have nearly doubled in value in the past year. Chairman Stuart Wheeler expressed his optimism despite the imminent tax on bookmakers? gross profits, which is due to take effecr in October. Although this would reduce the rise in pre-tax profits to 40 percent, it is still a very positive result in a depressed global economy. When IG floated in 2000, it was the first spread-betting firm on the stock market and as competition from rivals such as Sporting Index and Zetters increases, IG is well prepared to face the challenges in its sector. |
