| Nevada Drafting Online Gambling Bill |
12/18/2000 Nevada Assemblywoman proposes legalizing and regulating Nevada-based gambling sites After the failure of Congress to ban Internet gambling this year, a Nevada state legislator is drafting a bill that aims to legalize and regulate the operation of Nevada-based gambling Web sites. Assemblywoman Merle Berman has stated that Nevada, like New Jersey, needs to be in the race with Atlantic City on regulating Internet gambling. According to Berman, ?The person who opens up shop first gets the repeat customer.? However, Berman sees California as an even bigger threat. ?But even more than Atlantic City, our competition is with California Indian gaming. California's got all the techies.? Although the details of the language of the legislation are still vague, Berman is currently gathering a consensus of people?s views on her aims to legalize and regulate Internet gambling for Nevada companies. ``The 71st session of the Nevada Legislature is to begin Feb. 5. The bulk of the bill drafts for the coming session are due Friday. Berman decided to propose the drafting of a Nevada bill after attending Internet gambling sessions at conferences this year. She has been initiating meetings with casino operators in order to gather their opinions and suggestions. MGM Mirage spokesman Alan Feldman stated that the company was in favor of Internet gambling provided that it was legalized and regulated under the same regulatory standards by which Nevada casinos operate. Both MGM Mirage and Harrah's have entered agreements with Silicon Gaming and iwin.com, respectively, to co-develop games-for-prizes Web sites in order to be prepared for the eventuality of legalized Internet gambling. |
