12/30/2002 December 30, 2002 New Penguin Chick Born at Flamingo Wildlife Habitat and Second Expected New Year's Day LAS VEGAS - The Flamingo Las Vegas resort is welcoming its own New Year's babies as proud parents Norton, 10, and Sweet Pea, 4, dote on their newborn African penguin chick, born Dec. 30 in the couple's nest at the Flamingo Las Vegas Wildlife Habitat. There is one more fertile egg in the nest, expected to hatch New Year's Day. The habitat is open to the public, with narrated penguin feedings and presentations at 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily. There is no admission charge. Flamingo Las Vegas belongs to the Species Survival Program, affiliated with the American Zoos, Parks and Aquariums association. The program's management group plans future generations of African penguins after comparing the genetics of those held in zoos around the world, with the goal of maintaining a genetically diverse and strong population. African penguins are a "threatened" species, which is one step away from the "endangered" rating. Flamingo now has 13 African penguins (plus the remaining egg). When Sweet Pea and Norton were selected to mate, Sweet Pea was sent on loan from her home at the Baltimore Zoo. They have produced three clutches, but the first had only one egg, which they broke. The second clutch had two eggs, but neither was fertile. Norton has three chicks from a prior relationship, all born at the Flamingo and still in residence. These include Klondike (5), Mango (4) and Tiger (4). Their mother was sent to the Phoenix Zoo in order to free Norton to mate with Sweet Pea. Many of the older birds at the Flamingo have had multiple clutches of chicks and are well represented within the world's captive population. At least half of the Flamingo's penguins are retired from reproduction. African penguins have an average life expectancy of 25 years. They are fed a diet of smelt and anchovies with added vitamins. Normally they eat one pound of fish daily, about one-sixth of their body weight. Incubation of African penguin eggs lasts almost six weeks, and the parents normally care for the chicks for two months after they hatch. The chicks are fed by regurgitation from both parents. At about one month old, the chicks begin to leave the nest area, at which time the wildlife manager will take them into the habitat's holding area. This will be done for several reasons. If the chicks wander into another nest, they may be beat up by other birds. Chicks are not waterproof and cannot swim, so there is danger if they fall into the habitat's ponds. The chicks will learn to eat from human hands, helping them to become accustomed to handling by people. This reduces the stress on the birds when they are moved around, have veterinary check-ups or need to be handled. The veterinarian will draw blood during the first check-up for a blood screening, baseline, and to determine the bird's sex. Until the test results are available six weeks later, the chicks will be called Alpha and Beta. |
