| Madison's Animated Paintings On Display |
12/21/2000 LAS VEGAS -- An unusual exhibition of animated paintings--"The Adventures of Eddie Leon; Paintings by Ray Madison"--will be on display Jan. 16 through Feb. 10, 2001, in the Donna Beam Fine Art Galley at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Ray Madison is the name used by Ft. Worth artists Ed and Linda Blackburn for collaborative paintings. Both artists will be here for the opening. A public reception 7-9 p.m. Jan. 16 will be combined with a gallery talk by the artists. This exhibition is curated by Dave Hickey. In 1990, the Blackburns developed an idea of syndicating a comic strip about an art sleuth who is also a sign painter, according to a brochure from the Modern Art Museum, Ft. Worth. They adopted "Roy Madison" as their collaborative alias. When comic strip syndicates declined their proposal, the two artists decided to make large paintings based on the format of individual comic strip panels. This led the Blackburns in 1993 to an extended, focused exploration of how narration, realism, and abstraction can blend to create powerful and provocative images. They regard their detective drama as a metaphor for their own artistic investigation into how to reveal the true nature of an image. Ed Blackburn has exhibited his work since the early 1960s. He has been collected by numerous corporate and public collections, including Chase Manhatten Bank, Atlantic Richfield, Dallas Museum of Art, Modern Art Museum of Forth Worth, and the San Antonio Museum of Art. Linda Blackburn has exhibited since the late 1970s. She is represented in numerous corporate and private collections. This project has been funded, in part, by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday. The gallery is free. For more information call 895-3893. |
