5/10/2001 Las Vegas bats flock to the hottest spot on the Strip for a bug feeding frenzy The Luxor Hotel-Casino is the latest hotspot, not for avid gamblers but for bug-hungry bats. Hundreds of bats are attracted to the Luxor?s ?sky beam? almost every night. The Luxor claims to have the most powerful light in the world, bright enough to be seen on a clear night up to 250 miles away from an airplane at cruising altitude and certainly bright enough to attract moths, bettles, even birds and especially bats. According to bat expert, Brett Riddle, a biology professor at the University of Nevada, the bats, mostly Brazilian free-tailed bats and Western pipistrelles, from the surrounding area within a 20 mile radius hone in on the ?sky beam? when the wind is right. When the wind is blowing in other directions and with it, their ?meal?, the bats go elsewhere. This phenomenon is simply a bonus for the Luxor, which is enjoying the added publicity. "We don't have a position on the bats," said Luxor spokeswoman Hillary Bernstein. "It's just nature at work. Bats are attracted to bugs, bugs are attracted to light and we have the brightest light in the world. Go figure." And in the meantime, if the added attraction also attracts some batty gambling patrons, the Luxor will simply continue to bask in the light of the ?sky beam?, with its mouth closed, of course. |
