| Jay Cohen to appear on 60 Minutes |
|
12/21/2000 Cohen will comment publicly for the first time since his arrest in 1998 for taking bets over the Internet.
Convicted Internet and telephone bookmaker Jay Cohen is set to comment publicly for the first time since his arrest in 1998. Cohen, the first American ever convicted of taking bets over the Internet, will appear on an upcoming episode of the CBS-TV news magazine "60 Minutes." The segment is scheduled to air early next year. Cohen and 20 others were charged by the U.S. government in 1998 with taking sports wagers by phone and over the Internet, a felony violation of the federal Wire Act. Cohen, co-owner of Antiguan online sports book World Sports Exchange, was the only one of the 21 charged who elected to return to the U.S. and stand trial. In February of this year, Cohen had his trial by jury in New York and was convicted on all charges. In August, he was fined US$5,000 and sentenced to 21 months in prison. He is currently appealing the sentence. Cohen was regularly in the public eye prior to his arrest, in an effort to promote online gambling in general and World Sports Exchange in particular. However, since his arrest in March of 1998, he has made no public comments, on the advice of his attorney.
