| Survivor may not survive online gambling ban |
5/5/2001 Television shows and prize-based promotions could fall under definition of an interactive gaming service In its fervor to ban Internet gambling, the Australian government may have caught up some victims of the law including top-rating television shows such as Survivor and Who Wants to be a Millionaire. The Federation of Australian Commercial Television Stations (FACTS) has warned that many television shows and promotions involving prizes, an element of chance or audience interaction could also be caught under the wide definition of an interactive gambling service. The federal government intends to ban Australian punters from placing bets at Australian gambling companies, with exceptions, it appears for sports and race betting. In a submission to a Senate inquiry, FACTS stated, "The viewing public of Australia will suffer if many of the existing and familiar forms of entertainment are prohibited." The growth of the local television production industry may also be impaired, FACTS explained, "If much of the existing Australian content, such as our diverse range of game shows, are classed as interactive gambling services, holders of commercial television broadcasting licenses will need to find alternative content." And it stands to reason that much of the new content will not be Australian, at the least in the near future, while the industry tries to come to terms with the laws that prevent them from broadcasting some of television?s most popular shows and viewers, too, object to this blatant intrusion into their viewing experience by the government. |
