4/11/2002 Casting has been announced for the Las Vegas engagement of the musical phenomenon RENT at the Aladdin Theatre for the Performing Arts, opening on Tuesday, April 23 and playing through Sunday, April 28. Born in NYC and raised in Las Vegas, Justin Rodriguez stars as transvestite Angel Schunard. Rodriguez grew up in Summerlin, where his family still resides, attending Becker Junior High School and Cimarron Memorial High School. He began performing while at Cimarron Memorial, first playing keyboard with the choir, and then in the choir. He performed on-stage in The Wizard of Oz and The Pajama Game. In addition to performing in RENT Rodriguez is also pursing a career in the record industry. The cast also features: Jordan Ballard as performance artist Maureen Johnson, David Oliver Cohen as filmmaker Mark Cohen, Bridget Anne Mohammed as public interest lawyer Joanne Jefferson, Matthew S. Morgan as landlord Benjamin Coffin III, Kevin Spencer as songwriter Roger Davis, Krystal L. Washington as exotic dancer Mimi Marquez and Bruce Wilson, Jr. as computer-age philosopher Tom Collins. Rounding out the cast are Quintonio Angelil, Alison Burns, Derrick Cobey, Noreen Crayton, Jackie Maraya, Cole McClendon, Brian Ashton Miller, Clark Mims, Brandon L. Pearson, Damian DeShaun Smith, Jay Wilkison and Haneefah Wood in the ensemble. An Oklahoma City native, Jordan Ballard (Maureen), recently performed the role of Ariel with the national tour of Footloose. David Oliver Cohen (Mark) attended NYU, and currently stars in the Nickelodeon series ｳTaina.ｲ Born and raised in New York City, Bridget Anne Mohammed (Joanne) writes and arranges her own R&B material. Matthew S. Morganｹs (Benny) credits include Sweeney Todd, Joseph?Dreamcoat, A Chorus Line and Falsettos. Kevin Spencer (Roger) hails from Hamilton, Ontario. He has toured Canada, US, and the UK with his band, Mezzanine. Krystal L. Washington (Mimi), a Indiana native, attended Ball State University and is thrilled to be performing in her first national tour. Born in Hawaii and raised in Wichita, Bruce Wilson, Jr. (Tom Collins) has performed on ｳShowtime at the Apolloｲ. Inspired by Pucciniｹs La Boheme, Rent is a joyous, breathtaking and often bittersweet musical that celebrates a community of artists living on the edge and reaching for glory in New Yorkｹs East Village. Sweeping all major theater awards, including the 1996 Tony Award for Best Musical as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Rent captures the heart and spirit of a generation.
