JAZZ GREAT MAYNARD FERGUSON RETURNS TO LA CAGE THEATER AT THE RIVIERA, JANUARY 22

Jazz trumpeter Maynard Ferguson, a member of the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and winner of numerous Downbeat and Playboy Jazz Polls, will bring a new level of jazz to the La Cage Theater at the Riviera Hotel and Casino on Tuesday evening, January 22. Ferguson and his band Big Bop Nouveau will perform two exciting concerts, including songs from his gold album "Conquistador" and his top-ten single "Gonna Fly Now" from the motion picture "Rocky."

Born in Montreal, Quebec, Ferguson's innate musical talents were evident at an early age. He received his formal musical training at the French Conservatory of Music and, at 13 years of age, soloed with the Canadian Broadcasting Company Orchestra. By the age of 16, Ferguson was performing in Canada with the touring bands such as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman and Stan Kenton.

In 1949, Ferguson moved to the United States to permanently join the Stan Kenton Orchestra. Unfortunately, Kenton decided to take that year off and Ferguson joined up with Boyd Rayburn, Jimmy Dorsey and Charlie Barnett. The following year he finally joined the Kenton organization.

After leaving Kenton and a three-year stint as a first-call studio musician for Paramount Pictures, Ferguson formed his own orchestra and toured colleges and universities across the nation. His popularity soared as he won numerous awards.

In the late 1960's and early 1970's, Ferguson lived overseas and led a band composed of British musicians. While in England, he performed as a regular on the "Simon Dee Show" and completed a one-hour television special called "The Wonderful World of Maynard Ferguson."

Ferguson returned to the United States in 1974 after his recorded version of "MacArthur Park" became a hit, causing his concert schedule in America to triple in size. When his recordings of "Gonna Fly Now," the theme from the motion picture, "Rocky" reached the top-ten on the pop charts and his album "Conquistador" turned gold, the demand for Ferguson's personal appearances became staggering.

Throughout the 1980's to the present, Ferguson maintains a busy schedule of concerts across the country with his new band Big Bop Nouveau. The group is composed of young, enthusiastic, talented, and happy musicians striving for perfection. Under Ferguson's tutelage, perfection is what the audience receives in each and every concert.
