| New Orleans offers concession to struggling Harrah痴 casino |
2/12/2001 Hotel-Motel Association to allow Harrah's to operate a large hotel The future of Harrah's struggling New Orleans casino seemed to be looking up last week after the Greater New Orleans Hotel-Motel Association finally withdrew its objections to letting the gambling house operate a large hotel. According to a statement issued by the association?s board, Harrah's will be able ?to buy/build/or lease a 450-room hotel for the duration of the agreement with the statute enacted by the state legislature." The association also agreed to forego a US$5 million contribution by the casino toward the expansion of the nearby Morial Convention Center and to drop a proposed additional US$1 million increase by the casino to the New Orleans Marketing Corporation. Without concessions by the state, city and others, the casino's owner said it might have to close by March 31, resulting in 2 500 people losing their jobs. Mayor Marc Morial said the City of New Orleans was prepared to restructure its agreements to keep the casino open. |
