| Lawyers condemn moratorium |
12/9/2000 Australian lawyers protest the Federal Governments moratorium, saying it will force punters to use offshore web sites. Sections of the legal profession in New South Wales have come out in protest of the Federal Government's Internet gambling moratorium. Laws, backdated to May this year, have been passed by the Senate, imposing a 12-month ban on gaming websites which were not up and running before that time. The chairman of the New South Wales Young Lawyers' Information Technology Committee, Andrew Perry, says the ban will force punters to use offshore web sites. Consumers will turn to online casinos based in tax havens such as Antigua, Saint Kitts and the Cook Islands where they will not have the protection of Australian laws. "Essentially a moratorium will drive the industry underground rather than providing a regulated framework for individuals to participate in a protected environment," stated Perry. However, the Federal Government is unmoved despite threats of legal action from at least one state. The Tasmanian Government is currently considering its legal options since the moratorium affects five betting licenses it granted this year. The Northern Territory and Queensland say the Commonwealth would be better off regulating Australian sites instead of trying to ban them since online gaming will still be available through international operators. Communications Minister Richard Alston stated that the main aim of the moratorium is to freeze the expansion of the Internet gambling industry while the Government investigates the feasibility and consequences of a permanent ban. |
