| Downunder tops ups Aussie Millions |
5/14/2001 First $1 million poker tournament to be held at the Crown Casino, Melbourne Crown Casino is planning a major event for January, 2003 ? Aussie Millions - the southern hemisphere's first $1 million poker tournament. The top players will enjoy subsidized two-week stays in Crown Towers while the lucky winner of the tournament stands to gain at least $500,000 in addition to a trophy, out of a prize pool ranging between $1 million to $1.5 million. The contest is expected to draw over 150 players. Each entrant into the contest will stake $10,000 and the games will continue until only the tournament champion remains. The prize pool will be divided among the ten finalists. "And this is just the beginning," said Richard Longhurst, the casino's executive general manager, said yesterday. "Our aim, within a couple of years, is to offer a first prize of $US1 million." We want to brand Crown, and Melbourne, as having the biggest and the best of everything, and that certainly includes poker," explained Longhurst. Crown hopes to make the Aussie Millions as popular as the Poker Million open tournament hosted by Ladbrokes. The Poker Million champion, John Duthie, will be amongst the entrants going for the Aussie Millions in Melbourne. The final playoff will be broadcast live on Australian TV. |
