| LITTLE ANTHONY & THE IMPERIALS, SONNY TURNER'S PLATTERS TO APPEAR AT STARDUST AUGUST 17, 18 AND 19 |
|
7/17/2000 July 17, 2000 Two of the most successful vocal groups of rock 'n roll's formative decade will co-headline at the Stardust Resort and Casino August 17, 18 and 19.
Little Anthony and the Imperials and Sonny Turner's Platters will appear in concert at 8 p.m. each night in the resort's Wayne Newton Theater.
Both groups rode to fame on a wave of evolving musical tastes in the 1950s with romantic ballads gently propelled by a subtle rock 'n roll beat.
The Platters pioneered this easy-listenting form of rock singing with the 1955 megahit "Only You." Two years later Litle Anthony and the Imperials cashed in on the style with the million-selling "Tears On My Pillow."
Brooklyn-born Anthony Gourdine was dubbed "Little Anthony" by legendary radio personality Alan Freed. As the Imperials' lead vocalist, the teenage prodigy excited record buyers and rock show audiences with a series of chart-toppers led by the novelty tune "Shimmy, Shimmy, Ko-Ko Bop."
In the mid-1960's, he enjoyed another run of hit recordings, including "Goin' Out Of My Head," "Hurt So Bad," "I Miss You" and "Take Me Back."
Little Anthony and the Imperials have received the pretigious Pioneer Award from the Smithsonian Institute's Rhythm and Blues Foundation. Their legacy includes 17 Top 40 hits.
Sonny Turner became lead vocalist for the Platters in 1960 and was instrumental in introducing the group's music to a worldwide audience over the course of their frequent overseas tours.
His strong, resilient voice and magnetic stage presence continue to enrich Platters' classics such as "The Great Pretender," "The Magic Touch," "My Prayer," "Twilight Time," "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" and "Enchanted."
In 1990 the Platters were elected to the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame.
Tickets to the Stardust show are $19.95 per person, including tax, tip and one beverage. Ticket information can be obtained by calling the Stardust box office at 702-732-6325.
Wayne Newton, who appears at the Stardust 40 weeks a year, will return on September 11. |
