March Dance Concert At Unlv Features Many Stars

LAS VEGAS -- Contemporary Dance Theatre at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas presents its annual Spring concert at the Judy Bayley Theatre at 8 p.m. March 24 and March 25, 2000, with a 2 p.m. matinee March 25. Admission is free to UNLV students with valid ID and $8 for the general public. All tickets must be reserved through the Performing Arts Center Box Office, 895-ARTS.

"This is an exciting concert of choreography by national, international guest artists, artists in residence, and faculty," said Louis Kavouras, chair of the Department of Dance, who this month was honored with the Regents Award for Creative Activity. The concert, in addition, will feature performances by UNLV dance students.

Kavouras will dance in April with the Erick Hawkins Dance Company in their New York season at the 91st Playhouse in New York City.

Several works will be premiered at the UNLV concert, including "Tides" choreographed by guest artist Ralph Perkins. This work is set to the music of Seal and explores the deterioration and change that happens within relationships. This modern dance piece is broken into three sections--Conflict, Individual Thought, and Resolution.

Joseph Pepe De Chiazza has choreographed the ballet "Isadora," which is a dance in the imagined manner of Isadora Duncan with impressions taken from text, photographs, and observations of Isadora Duncan workshops. The piece is prefaced with this quote from Isadora Duncan (1878-1927): "As a child, I danced on the sea beach...the movement of the waves rocked with my soul...could I dance as they...their eternal message of rhythm and harmony?"

Professor Cathy Allen presents her dance comedy, "Let x=x." In this modern dance, soloist Elena Wiegand portrays a teenager in amath class who drifts off in imagination and takes the class along for the ride.

Professor Emily Yewell is premiering her jazz work "Lady Nicotine" inspired by tobacco growing in the fields of Kentucky, her childhood home. This piece explores the paradox of how smoking is portrayed as bringing with it beauty, popularity, elegance, love, etc., whereas the reality of its use is vastly the opposite. During a summer visit home to Kentucky, Yewell was struck by the sardonic realization that the beautiful tobacco plant in the fields which provides a large part of western Kentucky's economy is typically used for smoking products that cause devastation.

Professor Victoria Dale's work "Issues" is a suite of dances choreographed in a modern jazz dance idiom that addresses four contemporary social issues--drugs, economic conditions, self-image, and spousal abuse.

Last year, the UNLV Department of Dance was named as one of the top 25 outstanding dance departments in the nation by Dance Spirit Magazine.
