9/24/2001 September 24, 2001 LAS VEGAS - The Commodores, who blazed a trail throughout the 70s as one of Motown's most significant and popular musical groups, will appear in concert Nov. 29 - Dec. 1 with one show each night at 9:00 p.m. in the Hilton Theater. Tickets are available at the Box Office for $35, $45 and $55, or may be purchased by calling (702) 732-5755, or toll free (800) 222-5361. They signed with Motown Records in 1971 and toured, opening for the Jackson Five. Their first big hit was an instrumental called "Machine Gun." They followed with a string of 22 gold records, six platinum records, two double platinum records and three triple platinum albums, selling close to 40 million records. Their first recordings for the label were produced in Muscle Shoals, Ala., by the well-known producing duo of Terry Woodford and Clayton Ivey. The Commodores have roots in Alabama and were inducted into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, alongside groups and artists like Alabama, Hank Williams, Erskine Hawkins, Wilson Pickett, Temptations, Nat King Cole and Sonny James. The Commodores scored with such hits as "I Feel Sanctified," "Slippery When Wet," "Fancy Dancer," "Just To Be Close To You," "Sweet Love," "Easy," "Three Times A Lady," "Sail On," and "Still." The hit recordings included four Top Five albums: Commodores, Commodores Live Natural High and Midnight Magic. In 1982, Lionel Richie left to pursue a solo career. J.D. Nicholas was added to the band and following the hit album Nightshift, the group left Motown Records and moved to Polygram Records where they release the ever-popular Rock Solid.
