7/25/2001 July 25, 2001 (LAS VEGAS)---After seventeen years with Circus Circus/Mandalay Resort Group properties, Excalibur Hotel/Casino's Vice President and General Manager Don Givens resigns his tenure on July 31, 2001 and heads to Phoenix, Arizona to build a church. Givens grew up in Las Vegas and began his career in the hotel industry as a dishwasher on the famous Las Vegas Strip, at the Holiday Inn, which is now Harrah's. He attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on a full scholarship from the Nevada Resort Association and received a degree in Hotel Administration with a minor in Marketing. He has worked at the Thunderbird, Sahara Hotel, Edgewater/Colorado Belle in Laughlin, Circus Circus, Hacienda, Luxor, and Excalibur. In 1994, Givens became the first African American to hold the position of Vice President/General Manager at a major strip property. Even though the hotel industry has been in Givens' blood for many years, religion has been a part of his family for decades. His father, Bishop Melvin Givens also pastors a church, so the calling from a higher power spoke volumes to Givens. In August, Givens, his wife Wenda, and three of their seven children will move to Phoenix and build a church from scratch. "I will miss the employees of Excalibur," said Givens. "The castle has been a wonderful place to discover my passions and connect with so many truly talented, intelligent, and loyal friends who have inadvertently inspired me on to my next chapter in life, ministering to the needs of those who simply need help," Givens added. |
