| Casino system to be offered to American Net Users |
1/9/2001 DCEG to launch an Internet bingo and casino system that will also be made available to Net users in the US The Dot Com Entertainment Group (DCEG) recently announced its plans to launch an Internet bingo and casino system through a licensing pact with Altadena Investments Ltd. of Cyprus to produce an internert casino and bingo system that will be made available even to Net users in the US. DCEG?s expertise lies in Net bingo technology, which it licenses to pay-for-play Internet bingo halls. DCEG, based in Buffalo, NY will install its bingo and casino technology at Altadena's Internet hosting facilities in Costa Rica. DCEG is gambling on the growing acceptance of online gaming in the US, having been encouraged by the recent failure of the US anti-gambling lobby to pass legislation banning online gaming. Over the past several months, major players in the Las Vegas gaming industry have announced their intention to launch ?play for fun? gaming sites. In October, the Nevada Gaming Board approved a measure to allow state residents to bet on football games and horse races using the Internet. Land-based casinos looking to become involved in online gaming and others involved in the internet casino industry are optimistic that steps like these will be the precursor for legal online gaming in the US. DCEG considers online gaming as a legitimate ''e-commerce sector'' even though the Wire Wager Act from 1961 has been interpreted as prohibiting online gaming. Despite governmental objections, Americans have shown strong enthusiasm for gambling on the Net. A report last year from the online gambling industry estimated that 1 million Americans place bets online daily, while 4.5 million Americans have gambled online at least once. However, just to hedge its bets, the firm notes that it is not an Internet gaming company. Rather, it licenses the use of its commercial software applications and trademarks to clients who are located within jurisdictions that allow Internet gaming. |
