| Yahoo! gets into gaming |
1/27/2001 Yahoo! signs deal with wireless gaming company to provide WAP games including Blackjack and Poker Yahoo!'s gaming division recently announced a deal with wireless gaming specialists nGame Ltd. leading some Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) proponents to suggest that the portal sees a business opportunity in the nascent wireless gaming industry. Interactive gaming may represent a killer app for the technology. According to the agreement, Yahoo! Games will host a selection of nine wireless games developed by nGame, including Blackjack and Video Poker as well as more offbeat games. The goal in developing wireless games is to get people to stay online for extended periods, according to Alex Green, vice president of business development for nGame. "We're offering games that are very sticky and our game session times are longer than companies that make the standard games," he says. Most carriers bill by the minute, however nGame is actively campaigning for a flat rate. "We're huge proponents of [flat rate billing], and we think it's really going to help grow the wireless market," says Green. However, there are other obstacles in the way of wireless communication growth. According to P.J. McNealy, a senior analyst with the Gartner Group, the small size of the WAP phone screen is a deterrent. "There are some inherent challenges to making [the wireless gaming market] work, such as the screen size of the device," he says. "The gaming experience has to be compelling and there has to be a broadband or persistent connection." In the case of WAP, card games like Blackjack and Poker are much better suited to present technology than more complex, graphic-based games. |
