| Tony-Winning Musical Opens At Unlv Oct. 1 |

9/14/1999 LAS VEGAS -The Tony Award-winning play "Kiss of the Spider Woman -the Musical" opens at 8 p.m. Oct. 1, 1999, in the Judy Bayley Theatre at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
Those with a sense of adventure who enjoy explosive music, enthralling dances, and witty humor will especially enjoy this unique play by John Kander, Fred Ebb, and Terrence McNally. Directed and choreographed by Rafael Castanera, the cast features Stephen Reyes as Molina, Jim Ballard as Valentin, and Chrissy Wright as Aurora. Jeff Fiala designed the set. Lighting is by Brackley Frayer with sound design by Andrew Duckworth and flying by Foy. UNLV alumni Katrina Hertfelder designed the costumes.
Rafael Castanera, a freelance director and choreographer from New York, has gained considerable attention directing plays in the Salt Lake City area. Music director is Dr. Warren Marsh, Las Vegas, who served as musical director and conductor of the Downey Civic Light Opera for 27 years and has been a visiting professor at the University of Texas and Brigham Young University.
Cast includes Andy Kaempfer, Joel Hanson, Ernie Curcio, Sherri Brewer, Janelle Lannan, Mark Allen White, Isaiah Urrabazo, Will Adamson, Adam Kilbourn, Clayton Chauvin, Keith Dotson, Tye Brown, Mike Kennedy, Mike Taavalsky, Alain Gaillard, and Jonathan Shultz.
The musical, based on a novel by Manuel Puig, follows a compelling friendship that develops between cellmates in a Latin American prison. Molina, a window dresser, has been jailed for deviant sexual behavior. Valentin, a macho political activist, is being tortured to force him to reveal secrets about this underground network. Molina passes the time by recalling movies that featured his favorite actress Aurora, the lethal Spider Woman. The musical has adult situations and language as well as partial nudity.
Performances are at 8 p.m. Oct. 1, 2, 8, and 9, with matinees at 2 p.m. Oct. 3 and 10. A special performance will be at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 3. General admission tickets are $15 and are on sale at the Performing Arts Center Box Office. Students, faculty, handicapped, and military may purchase tickets for only $12.
