3/18/2001 New Hampshire Legalized Gambling Proposal Meets With Strong Opposition New Hampshire legislative efforts to expand legal gambling met with sharp opposition last week. State Representative Robert L'Heureux had the support of only two legislators behind him when he proposed a bill to permit the state get into the casino ownership business. ?If we're going to get involved in (expanded) gambling, the only way we are going to do it is to have the state operate it," said L'Heureux. However, according to Coalition co-Chairman Herbert Hansen, "Gambling is gambling whoever operates it and it would be bad for our state." More than two-dozen citizens expressed their opposition to this bill and two other bills that would allow cities and towns the option of letting any commercial establishment apply to have slot machines. Even State Representative Vivian Clark admitted she was ambivalent about her own bill to have the state Sweepstakes Commission hold a sealed bid option to award slot machine hall permits in cities and towns that would allow them. Various high-ranking officials expressed their objection to the proposal. Former Senator Jim Rubens said a casino is just like a mega-slot machine hall because most of the profit comes from these games, and this was further reinforced by Senator Clifton Below, who said studies showed that gambling addiction doubles within a 50-mile radius of video slot machine halls. Governor Jeanne Shaheen elected to veto the legislation that would legalize casino gambling. |
