2/26/2001 Tycoon to host reality-based show 釘illionaire� Wealthy casino magnate Donald Trump has proposed "Billionaire," a new reality-based game where four contestants, notified right before the show, attempt to spend $1 million in 30 minutes. The contestant who spends the fastest or comes the closest will win the goods they bought or the cash equivalent. Four co-hosts will report on each contestant's progress while Trump will serve as the show's main host, from atop his Trump Towers penthouse. "Billionaire" executive producer David Russo believes that Trump will be the ideal host. "Trump is almost like James Bond, but without the spy stuff. He is kind of omnipotent," says Russo. Although Trump has never hosted a television show before, Russo is not concerned. He says, "people love him, people hate him, but either way, people love to watch him." Aside from which, the show will be produced by top entertainment professionals including Barry Berk, a veteran producer of Entertainment Tonight and Access Hollywood. There are rules to make the game more challenging but fair. Contestants cannot use a phone or a computer; they are only allowed to purchase one item per establishment, at a sum of not more that US$200,000 per item; they cannot purchase money. To make it easier, they will be chauffeur driven and will be aided when making potentially difficult transactions like buying a house. The surprise aspect of the selection process appeals to Trump as it means the game will catch people in strange situations. Although contestants will go through an application process, they will not know whether they?ve been selected until the last moment when a camera crew arrives at their door. Trump comments, "So many people come to me with ideas and I very rarely accept them. This idea sounded awfully good to me...I will make sure I devote enough time to do it right." Trump said the show reminded him of a childhood TV favorites, Millionaire, a drama about an eccentric billionaire who would give away US$1 million to an average person. The show scheduled to debut this summer or fall. And who knows?they could be knocking on your door! |
